Day 2 of Wortzmans’ trek to Nashville for the ILTA conference opened with a thought-provoking keynote speech on Cybersecurity by Rod Beckstrom, former President and CEO of ICANN, the domain naming organization.
Mr. Beckstrom delved into the world of protecting IT resources from unwanted intrusion. He advised that over 70% of attacks target organizations of less than 100 employees. 78% of attacks are carried out using off the shelf, open source tools available to anyone.
He spoke about “Spearfishing”, one of the more recent social-engineered hacking methods. Spearfishing involves learning something personal about the target (such as a friend who posted current pictures of their trip on the target’s Facebook). An email is then sent from someone the target knows containing personal comments so that they will trust the contents and execute the exploit.
The takeaway message is…no matter how secure you make a system, expect it to be breached and have a response plan in place.
