Earlier today, Wortzmans posted a blog about how companies are responding to people who post negative reviews and comments online. A core value of our society is free speech. While posting on discussion forums is easy and bloggers and tweeters can hide behind obscure usernames, we must still consider what we write and take responsibility for what we post via email, blog or tweet.
The shocking and tragic shooting today on Parliament Hill clearly illustrated this point. Reporters and others were continually posting tweets as events unfolded. Many of these tweets were based on rumours, innuendo or just the imagination of the tweeter. Many were quickly contradicted by other tweets or official statements. Despite the popular belief that tweets can easily be removed, once they are retweeted, it is not so easy.
While we recognize that everyone demands breaking news instantaneously, it is imperative that we all consider what we are tweeting without just typing away because it is easy to do.
